Talk about innovative new vegetable packaging care of British design student Ben Huttly. These laser cut tags don’t use any harmful inks or waste and they are even made up of thousands of tiny seeds that can be planted.
I’m actually in the midst of adding a (mini) vegetable garden to our back yard, so I was so excited when I spotted this design (thank you Phaidon).
The world’s largest furniture fair has come and gone and I haven’t moved an inch. It’s true. Here I sit at my desk in Toronto, trying to catch just a glimpse of all the fun from last week.
So, here it is. My best attempt at a virtual round-up from Milan’s 50th anniversary show:
Cast concrete pendant lights by Foscarini. These remind me of the Benjamin Hubert lights I featured a little while back.
Tom Dixon paired up with Blackberry to promote the upcoming launch of their Playbook tablet (i.e. ipad challenger) and his own collection. There was an interactive installation including a theatre, restaurant, broadcasting center, etc…Love the idea behind this.
The British designer also showcased a few new pieces, including The Etch Shade shown below. It’s a pretty wild new lighting collection made of digitally etched brass sheets.
Hermes launched its first collection of furniture. Here’s a shot of a chair designed by Enzo Mari.
Target bookshelf by Nendo. Very creative take on this household staple.
Super Sputnik Stools by Ahmet Sismanoglu (Sisman) and Counterbalance fixture by Daniel Rybakken. Both part of the best young designers showcase.
Finally, these Frana pencil & paperclip holders by Christophe Guberan/ECAL for Alessi are right up my alley. These obviously aren’t major furniture pieces, but something fun that would spruce up my desk nicely. I can’t seem to resist grey and yellow these days.
So there you have it. Now, wouldn’t it be nice to actually get to be there in person next year!
I’m sorry, my fascination with all things bike related is in full form. I just can’t seem to get enough. Have you seen these insanely incredible custom bikes by Bertelli?
Every bicycle is totally unique and is assembled by hand by Francesco Bertelli in his NYC workshop, Biciclette Assemblate.
I love packaging, product design, labels, you name it. I’m always on the lookout for great collateral and I found it at the Ace Hotel. Very cool stuff by The Official Manufacturing Co.
I’m Katherine Yaphe, the founder and designer behind Oliver Yaphe, Inc. This business was an idea in my mind for a long time. I knew that I wanted to build something, I just didn’t know how. I worked in the corporate world dreaming of what to do next. Then one day I decided to just start. I launched with rugs. Branched off to artwork. Paper came next. We’ll see what’s to come. What I do know, is there will be more.
Oliver Yaphe Blog
I love being inspired to create. It doesn’t matter how big or small the undertaking, it’s more about this feeling that drives so much of what I do. This blog is my space to instill a bit of that energy to my readers. It’s a lofty goal. I might fail horribly. But every once in a while, something might click (or at least I hope so).
